23/365 The Trinity Root

~When the towers of the World Trade Center came crashing down on 9/11, a large sycamore tree in the church yard at St. Paul's Chapel took the brunt of the damage, saving the chapel. The root of that tree was excavated in 2003 and sculptor Steve Tobin memorialized it with this bronze sculpture which now sits in Trinity's courtyard.

ETA: Tobin created the bronze sculpture from 300 individual casting of the tree's roots to commemorate the events of September 11. The sculpture was dedicated here on this site on September 11, 2005. The original sycamore roots, painstakingly preserved by Tobin with the help of tree experts, now rest permanently in the St. Paul's Chapel churchyard. (From sign near sculpture)
